Smartphone for Water Quality: Smartphone Detection from Paper Microfluidics for Monitoring Water Jeong-Yeol Yoon. Safety (UA-BME) and Kelly Reynolds (UA-COPH) RESEARCH PROGRESS REPORT UA-01 -S 2018 STATUS: Continuing, No Additional Funds Requested Relationship to Technology Roadmap: Municipal Water Use Practices and Wastewater Reuse Rationale: Norovirus detection requires a low limit of detection due to its high pathogenicity. Our goal is to develop and apply an in-field smartphone technology for the rapid detection of noroviruses in water. Objectives: 1. Evaluate intact norovirus limit of detection from drinking H 2 O outbreak samples and feces 2. Field test prototype in various water types with utility personnel 3. Prototype improvement- one smartphone and increased linear detection range Accomplishments: 1. Demonstrated LOD of 1 -10 genome copies 2. Developed preliminary field prototype for use Water & Environmental Technology Center Approach: Work is planned to reduce prototype to a single cell phone design utilizing smartphone as both a light source and detector. An optical fiber will be added to the smartphone light source. This is expected to improve prototype ease of use and extend the linear range of the assay while reducing detection variability. The single phone prototype will be pilot tested in the field with utility personnel. Key Deliverables: Field testing of smartphone prototype will provide data on smartphone ease of use, infield detection limits, and quality control assessments. Budget: No new funds requested
