Smart Grid – A Pilot • Smart Grid: “A Smart Grid delivers electricity from suppliers to customers using digital technology to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability. ” • BESCOM has distinction of leading the Indian Power sector by setting examples ; (Pilots) Ø Energy Efficient lighting system (BELP) Ø Agriculture DSM on ESCO model • A Pilot project in Electronic city, Bangalore, covering about 17, 000 customers. 2
Smart Grid – A Pilot • One day workshop conducted on 5 th January 2010 on “Smart Grid” to take inputs from key stake holders. • Key stake holders like Ministry of Power, Government of India, Government of Karnataka, USAID, Private Sector Vendors and Service providers attended the workshop. • USAID is providing technical assistance in the form of Consultant. • They have appointed M/s. CPRI as the Local Consultant. • USTDA is providing technical assistance in the form of Internal Consultant. 3
Smart Grid – A Pilot • A proposal has been sent to Ministry of Power, Government of India seeking financial assistance. • Government of India has responded positively and proposal is being processed. • Many private sector vendors/service providers have also expressed desire to partner the pilot apart from USAID. • Pilot project is going to be on “Public Private Partnership” model. • Bangalore is best to test the Smart Grid technology in India as plat form being created through implementation of SCADA in Transmission by KPTCL and DAS in 11 k. V system by BESCOM. • Smart Grid pilot is going to be first of its kind in India. 4
Smart Grid – A Pilot • Selection of site for pilot identification: Following five sites are being studied by National Consultants: Ø Ø Ø • Rajajinagar Industrial Area Peenya Industrial Area Electronic City EPIP Whitefield M G Road and Brigade Road We are in the process of appointing International consultants for the pilot project. 5
