Smart. Driving
Mission Statement ● Improve the safety conditions on the road -Road side accidents cause nearly 1. 2 million deaths worldwide -About 50 million persons are injured in traffic accidents each year ● Reduce the amount of traffic congestion ● Install a system to alert drivers and pedestrians of traffic conditions and situations
Identify Customer Needs ● Quick and easily accessible information regarding. . . o Accidents or heavy congestion o Locations where customers are waiting for a ride o Quicker routes ● Communication and location for taxis ○ All taxis in the city should be connected ○ GPS systems monitor location, speed, direction, destination, etc ● Efficiency and convenience for customers ○ Notification with address alert nearest available taxi
How it Works ● Taxis ○ Dispatch software that gives real-time information ○ Customer address and time to be picked up ○ Customer destination ○ Nearest unoccupied taxi will be dispatched ● Cars ○ Software update for factory and aftermarket GPS systems ○ Allows for spoken/pop-up notifications on traffic/road conditions, quickest routes, accidents, and misc. safety bulletins ○ Emphasis on real-time and quickly delivered information
Advantages ● ● ● Safety improvements Can help in avoiding congestion Preventing road traffic crashes Easier for police to monitor the roads Can help find better possible routes o helps save time and fuel
Target Specs ● ● ● Low cost Reduce emissions Real time info Easy to use Display easily accessible
Concept Generation ● Original Ideas ❖ Have a system where there are small building located around major roads and highways that distribute message to cars within the given area (using wifi) ❖ Have all taxis in major cities linked together and be able to text taxi service where you are located, shows all locations of taxis in the area on the screen in the taxi
Concept Selection ● Small buildings/Wi. Fi would get too expensive ● Small buildings were also unnecessary ● Still wanted to deliver information to civilians in their vehicles
Final Idea ● Messages will appear on screen of car or have a voice automated system ● For older cars, there will be a software update within the cars electronic system o Update gps system and also alerts to be sent
Sustainability ● Apply real time information to the customer providing better routes to reduce time and fuel ● This will lower the amount of emissions that are produced from the car ● Software updates every 6 months o New roads and new destinations
Benchmarking ● Current dispatch taxi system and gps systems ● Garmin ● Taxi. Caller dispatch system
Software Life Cycle ● Software will continually be in use or in the process of updating/improving ● Minimal effect on environment; few physical products ● Use recycled plastic to produce the CD (polycarbonate plastic)
