SLAVERY AND THE SLAVE TRADE
BACKGROUND Slavery goes back thousands of years in history. Slavery has existed in virtually every part of the world (to some degree) and in virtually every culture in the world. The first accounts of slavery stretch all the way back to Sumer under the leadership of Hammurabi (ca. 1760 B. C. )
BACKGROUND Throughout the world slavery is outlawed today. The last country to officially abolish slavery was the African country of Mauritania in 1981. Although slavery is illegal in today’s world it still exists in very high numbers (estimates are between 12 -27 million people).
DEFINITION Slavery- when one person is given the right over another as if the other is property and has no choice in the matter. Slaves are bought, sold, not allowed to escape, and must work for their owner.
THE SLAVE TRADE Slavery in Africa began with Arab slave traders travelling into Africa and bartering with strong African empires (such as the Mali). These slave traders would trade Middle Eastern goods for African slaves
THE MIDDLE PASSAGE The Americas became a growing slave market as European colonization began to spread. The Spanish and the Portuguese first brought African slaves to their colonies in the Caribbean and Central and South America.
THE MIDDLE PASSAGE Eventually the British and the French began bringing African slaves to their colonies in North America. The route that slave ships would take from the African coast to the American coast was called the Middle Passage.
TRIANGLE TRADE The Triangle Trade route was the three sided route between the Americas, Europe, and Africa whereby slaves were traded as well as other goods.
