Skipton Castle by Joanna Chau • Skipton Castle is over 900 years old. • A Norman baron originally used it as a Motte and Bailey castle in 1090. • The first owner was Robert de Romille. • Today it stands as a tourist attraction and a private residence. • It is one of the best preserved castles in England.

Lady Anne Clifford • Lady Anne Clifford was the last Clifford to own the castle. • She repaired the castle after the Civil War. • In the courtyard it stands a yew tree planted by Lady Anne. • Lady Anne wrote her own letter to her father when she was eight. • She fought hard for her own rights.

Inside the castle • There is a large banqueting hall, • a medieval kitchen, • a new kitchen, • a three-floor watchtower, • and many other rooms and cellars. • There is a place called the “long drop”. Do you know what it is? Why is it “long”?

The Dungeon • The dungeon was built over where a drawbridge was. • It was very dark and cold. • There was no toilet in there.

Activities • Wordsearch • Make a 3 D Gatehouse • Make a 3 D Castle Kitchen • Write on Lady Anne’s paper and envelope
