Self HARM Recently reported in the press (October 2017) TEENAGE HARM’S 68% UP Cases of self-harming among teenage girls shot up two-thirds in three years –a study reveals. Experts warned increased levels of pressure and stress from social media use may be fueling a rise in mental health issues. Reports of self-harm among girls aged from 13 – 16 rose by 68% between 2011 and 2014. Among boys the same age the rise was 52% The statistics from GP’s found three quarters of self-harm cases were among girls aged 10 – 19. Less than half were referred for mental health treatment - with teens living in poorer areas the least likely to get specialist help. Changing Faces Presentation title

Tips Like with any cover up, ensure you ask the client their expectations, if the client hates their scars that much, then their expectations will be that they want the scars to disappear completely. With scars like keloids, give realistic expectations to how much can actually be covered. Explain that with certain scarring the aim will be to make the scars look less obvious than to cover completely. Some self-harm scars can cover the whole arm/leg, be shiny in texture, or dry. Discuss other self-help techniques like using bio oil or massage to enable them to understand there are other options that can reduce the appearance of the scars. When the cover up is complete some my clients can feel that they looked too pale. This was due to them being used to seeing the red/purple scars on their arms making their arms look darker than they naturally are. Explain this to them, but if they do not like it you can either offer to use a slightly darker cream or apply a small amount of bronzer onto the arm. Changing Faces Presentation title

Techniques The majority of my clients have extensive scarring covering their arms and legs.

Techniques The majority of my clients have extensive scarring covering their arms and legs. • Using the spreading technique to allow large area coverage • Using my fingers to apply • Choosing either Veil, Keromask or Covermark due to the fluid consistency as these are softer then Dermcolor. However you still do need to get the best colour match. • Some scars may be a deep purple, so I used a fine brush to go over these areas, then dabbed using the finger method. • Apply a good amount of powder and leave for 5 -10 minutes • Brush powder off then use a damp cotton pad to remove any excess powder • Some deep purple scarring after some time may show through the creams. You may need to go over with another layer with a fine brush. If this happens you could also try using a barrier cream before applying the camouflage creams. Changing Faces Presentation title
