Skimming is different from Scanning. Here are the differences: SKIMMING SCANNING Usually before reading the book, just to get a glimpse of what the book is about Usually after reading the book, when you want to locate specific info Do this by reading the Do this by looking at intro, the first sentence of the table of content to a paragraph, subheadings, find specific chapter or illustrations, and/or the by looking at a synopsis at the back of the keyword in the book (if any)

USAGE ■ People skim when they want to know whether a book is worth buying/borrowing or when people want to know what a website is about without reading the whole page ■ People scan when they have read the book but want to go back to it to find something, like when you know you’ve read something in a book but doesn’t know where it is specifically. People who scan also have specific keywords in mind. For example, if you want to find info about the definition of contemporary art, your keyword would be: definition, defined, means, contemporary, or contemporary art. And you will scan for those words in the book.
