SKILL AND ABILITY l What is the difference
SKILL AND ABILITY l What is the difference between skill and ability? l Name three key abilities for a chosen sport. l Abilities can be sub-divided into physical and perceptual/motor. l Physical, e. g. strength, flexibility, stamina. l Perceptual/motor, e. g. co-ordination, reaction time.
Perceptual Motor Abilities l Fleishman (1972) researched and proposed 11 perceptual motor abilities (pg. 537). l Perception Motor abilities involve picking up of information. l Examples include; Limb co-ordination, Reaction time, Speed of arm movement, manual / finger dexterity, aiming, wrist finger speed.
Physical Proficiency Abilities l l l l These are more general athletic abilities. Static/dynamic/explosive/trunk strength Flexibility Gross body co-ordination Gross body Equilibrium Stamina Others not included (Visual tracking, eye-hand/eye -foot co-ordination)
Definition of skill l “The learned ability to bring about predetermined results with maximum certainty, often with the minimum outlay of time or energy or both” (Knapp) l 1) skills are learned l 2) skills have an end/environmental goal. l 3) this goal is achieved with consistency. l 4) minimal energy and time to accomplish.
Skill Classification l Open / closed. l Open-variable (football dribble), closedrepeated (forward roll). l Continuous / discrete / serial. l Self paced / externally paced (dictated by performer/dictated by external factors). l Gross / fine (major muscle, small movement).
