POP ART Pop artists, such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, used identifiable imagery taken from media and pop culture to celebrate the commonplace objects and people in our everyday life. Due to the use of commercial and popular images, Pop Art has become one of the most recognizable styles of modern art.

SKETCHBO OK #4 Commercial Product Line and Colour Drawing Before we begin our Pop Art unit, you will create a line and colour drawing using a commercial product found in your home. • You will need: • Pencil and Eraser • Pencil Crayons • Artist Pen

SK ET CH BO OK #4: COM ME RCIAL P RODU CT LI NE AND C OLO UR D R AWIN G STEP 1: FIND A COMMERCIAL PRODUCT Find some kind of commercial product around your house – this means anything with a label or a logo. Try to keep the shape and design simple. I chose a can of chick peas from Save On Foods.

SK ET CH BO OK #4: COM ME RCIAL P RODU CT LI NE AND C OLO UR D R AWIN G STEP 2: DRAW YOUR PRODUCT USING PLAIN LINES Begin by drawing your commercial object using only line – no shading or texture. You will be drawing the same product three times so be sure to leave space for all three. Remember to use light lines that you can easily erase. The end result must have clean lines and no pencil marks.

SK ET CH BO OK #4: COM ME RCIAL P RODU CT LI NE AND C OLO UR D R AWIN G STEP 3: DRAW THE PRODUCT TWO MORE TIMES, OVERLAPPING Draw the same product two more times. Try to overlap the lines in some interesting way. Do not erase any lines that overlap.

SK ET CH BO OK #4: COM ME RCIAL P RODU CT LI NE AND C OLO UR D R AWIN G STEP 5: ERASE THE PENCIL MARKS Erase the pencil marks so you are only left with pen. Use your artist pen to define the outline of you drawing. Pop art is defined by its strong contour lines and bright colours.

SK ET CH BO OK #4: COM ME RCIAL P RODU CT LI NE AND C OLO UR D R AWIN G STEP 6: ADD COLOUR Use your pencil crayons to add bright coloured outlines to your drawing. Use either primary colours (red, blue, and yellow), secondary colours (orange, green, and purple), or three tertiary colours. Please label this drawing ‘Sketchbook 4’.
