Skeletal System STRUCTURE (shape) FUNCTION (job) Bone Living structure with lots of calcium (mineral) creating a mostly solid structure for support and protection. Skeleton Multiple bones together to provide an organism with support and structure. Joint An area where 2 or more bones come together for protection or movement. Cartilage Very smooth, flexible, and tough tissue in joints to protect the bones from grinding against each other. Ligament Strong tissue that connects bones to bones. Fluid Thick and slippery liquid to help joints move smoothly.
Parts of Bones STRUCTURE (shape) FUNCTION (job) Compact Bone Dense part of bone that provides support and protection. _______________________ Spongy Bone Provides additional support with out more mass. _______________________ Produces blood cells. ______________________ Marrow Outer Covering (Connective Tissue) Blood Vessels Minerals Provides a place for tendons and ligaments to attach and makes new bone cells. ______________________ Brings nutrients and Oxygen to cells then takes away wastes. _______________________ Mostly calcium provides hardness and strength.
Understanding Structure and Function Which bone is a more suited structure for providing protection-the cranium or humerus? Explain your answer.
Mystery Skeleton date List at least 5 things about the picture of the skeleton below; then place an O next to the statements that are observations, and an I next to the ones that are inferences. http: //nzphoto. tripod. com/animal/tuatara_bones. gif

Bones and Acids Mini SI Report Question: What happens to a bone when it is soaked in acid for 4 days? Background information: Bones are made of bone cells and minerals. Acids breakdown minerals. Hypothesis: I think the bone will ___________________ when it is soaked in acid for 4 days because ___________. Materials List: ü ü Clean chicken bone. vinegar Jar with a cover Graduated cylinder Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. Take necessary measurements and make initial observations on bones Place clean chicken bone in jar. Pour enough vinegar in the jar to cover the chicken bone (in milliliters). Cover the jar and let sit for 4 days. Data and Observations: Conclusion: Bone Day 1 Length 7 cm Circumference 3 cm Other Hard & white Day 4
