Bones in the body… • The human body contains 206 bones • Skeletal system provides shape and support, allows movement, protects tissues and organs, stores materials, and produces blood cells
Joint • Joints are any place where bones come close together and can allow movement
Pivot Joint • A pivot joint is found in the neck and vertebrae
Hinge Joint • A hinge joint is found in the elbow, it allows the elbow to move
Ball and Socket Joint • Ball and Socket Joints are found in the hip and femur bone
Ligaments • Bones are held together with stringy connective tissue called ligaments
Tendon • Tendons attach bones to muscle
Axial Skeleton • The axial skeleton is made up of the skull, the ribs, the breastbone, and the vertebral column
Appendicular Skeleton • The appendicular skeleton is the hands, feet, legs, hips, shoulders. There are 126 bones in the appendicular skeleton
Cartilage • Cartilage is a hard jelly like substance that forms your nose and ears
Marrow • Marrow is the soft material found in the middle of bones
Muscular System • Muscles always work in pairs. In order for skeletal muscles to move, they must contract or shorten.
Skeletal Muscle • Skeletal muscle contracts and allows your arms, legs, head and other body parts to move.
Smooth Muscle • Smooth muscle is involuntary. That means that smooth muscle can contract without you causing them to. These are found in your large and small intestines.
Cardiac Muscle • Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart. It is also an involuntary muscle.
