Skeletal Structure of the Cat
Purpose/Role of Parts of the Skeleton Skull (cranium)=provides protection for the brain Cervical vertebrae=top 7 vertebrae of the spine and form the neck, which supports the skull Thoracic vertebrae=each of the 12 bones of the backbone to which the ribs are attached Lumbar vertebrae=5 vertebrae in the lower back Coccygeal vertebrae=3 -5 segments of the vertebral column that make up the tail bones Femur=uppermost bone of the rear leg of the cat
Purpose/Role of Parts of the Skeleton Fibula=one of 2 bones of the lower rear leg of a cat Tibia=one of 2 bones of the lower rear leg of a cat Tarsals=any one of the 7 bones that make up the back part of the foot Pelvis=bony structure near the base of the spine to which the hind limbs or legs are attached Ribs=bones in the thoracic cage that protect the internal organs Sternum=bones forming the underside of the thoracic cage that protect the internal organs
YOUR TURN!!! Research the purpose/role of the following skeletal parts of the cat in small groups of 2 -3 students! You have 8 minutes! Go! Patella Radius Ulna Elbow Metatarsals Humerus Carpals Scapula Metacarpals Clavicle Phalanges Mandible Digits
Purpose/Role of Parts of the Skeleton Patella=“kneecaps” Ulna=one of 2 bones of the lower foreleg of a cat Metatarsals=paw bone between the heel and the phalanges Carpals=what would be the wrist bone on a human, allows movement between the foot/leg Metacarpals=any of the 5 bones in the hand Phalanges=toe bone Digits=a finger or toe
Purpose/Role of the Parts of the Skeleton Radius=one of 2 bones of the lower foreleg of a cat “Elbow”=allows movement between the lower and upper portion of the limbs Humerus=bone of the upper foreleg of a cat Scapula=shoulder bone Clavicle=technical term for collarbone Mandible=lower jaw
Anatomy of the Cat
Your Skeletal Model! Create your own skeletal model of the cat using the resources provided. Label all the skeletal parts of the cat on your pasta model. Utilize the rubric to check one another’s work to ensure all components are listed.
Your Skeletal Model! Pasta Pieces Plastic Plates Pipecleaners Glue guns Glue sticks
