Health in Prisons Project WHO Health in Prisons Project (HIPP) • Started in 1995 • Purpose: ‘to support Member States in improving public health by addressing health and health care in prisons, and to facilitate the links between prison health and public health systems both at national and international levels’

Topic needs urgent attention Health in Prisons Project • HIPP Member States asked for focus on women in prison already during annual conference and network meeting 2005 • Number of women prisoners is still increasing (even at a faster rate than number of male prisoners) • Women prisoners are still a minority their needs are often not addressed by prison policies and procedures • WHO calls for integrating gender analysis and actions into the work of WHO
