Passion Motivation Academic achievement Confidence Fulfilment If you play a musical instrument to grade 5 or above, and have a passion for performing and composing music, then you should seriously consider taking Music for A Level. GCSE Music or Grade 5 Theory are an advantage, but not a requirement.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AS Music – Year 12 Unit 1 Performing Unit 2 Composing Unit 3 Appraising A Level Music – Year 13 Unit 4 Performing Unit 5 Composing Unit 6 Appraising In Year 13 you can choose whether to specialise in Performance or in Composition, according to your strengths. You still have to do both, but will do more of the unit you are best at.

PERFORMING AS Music – in Year 12 you submit 6 -8 minutes of music,

If you are specialising in Composition, you submit an extra 6 -8 minutes of music. 22% or 14% of the A Level grade

COMPOSING AS Music – In Year 12 you submit 2 compositions; 3 -6 minutes

ASSESSMENT Performing units are externally assessed by a visiting examiner. You give a recital performance of your pieces to the examiner. Composing units are also assessed externally. You submit a portfolio of work which must include a recording, a score and a log for each piece. Appraising units are externally assessed through examination. The AS examination is 1 hour 30 minutes long, and the A Level examination is 2 hours 15 minutes long.

CAREER PROGRESSION AND SUBJECT COMBINATIONS If you love music, then an A Level in Music can lead to a wealth of different musical careers, including: • Soloist; • Conductor; • Orchestral instrumentalist; • Film music composer; Music A Level complements other Humanities and Arts subjects such as History, Modern Foreign Languages or English, but it complements Science subjects such as Physics and Mathematics equally well. • Writing music for adverts; • Teaching; • Arts administration; • Editing; • Events management. Universities welcome students with a qualification in Music because of the breadth of skills required to succeed at it.
