2. Strategies for reviewing the literature Why should I do a review of the literature? • As a starting point for my Phd to: • • Summarise the literature available on my topic; Gain insight in my topic of interest and in the scope of the field; Present an analysis of the available literature; Generate questions and address needs for further research.
2. Strategies for reviewing the literature Different types of reviews (Booth, 2009) “to view, inspect, or examine the literature a second time or again” • Critical review • Narrative review • Mapping review/systematic map • Meta-analysis • Mixed studies review/mixed methods review • Overview • Qualitative systematic review/qualitative evidence synthesis • Rapid review • Scoping review • State-of-the-art review • Systematic review • Systematized review • Umbrella review
2. Strategies for reviewing the literature Different types of reviews “you can browse through the indexes of books and journals until [you] come across a paragraph that looks relevant and copy it. If anything do not fit in with theory [you] propose [you] can leave it out” Narrative review • • • no defined method of searching no clear statement about which studies to include only a small selection of available literature may be incorporated Systematic review • • systematic search for studies a reproducible methodology Inclusion criteria for studies to identify all studies that would meet the criteria well-defined review question focus on summarization of data to see ‘what works’
2. Strategies for reviewing the literature Different types of reviews • • • Narrative review Systematic review integrating or comparing the findings from qualitative studies looking for themes across individual qualitative studies interpretative: broadening understanding of a particular phenomenon Qualitative Evidence Synthesis Metaanalysis • • • Statistic technique Combines the results of quantitative studies to provide a more precise effect of the results Aggregative: adding studies together
2. Strategies for reviewing the literature Different types of reviews Narrative review Systematic review Qualitative Evidence Synthesis Metaanalysis To bring together a quantitative effectiveness review and a qualitative review Mixed methods review
2. Strategies for reviewing the literature Different types of reviews Umbrella review = a mechanism for aggregating findings from several reviews that address specific questions SR 1 Narrative/ literature review SR 2 SR 3 Systematic review Qualitative Evidence Synthesis Metaanalysis Mixed methods review
2. Strategies for reviewing the literature Different types of reviews Rapid review Umbrella review • SR 1 Narrative review SR 2 SR 3 Systematic review • • what is already known about a policy or practice issue Systematic: Rigorous and explicit in method Quick: limiting the breadth or depth of the process Qualitative Evidence Synthesis Metaanalysis Mixed methods review
