SAFE COMMUNITIES ACT ▸ Ensures that the civil rights to due process and equal protection shared by all people in Massachusetts are consistently and fully honored regardless of immigration status by clearly defining and limiting cooperation between local police and ICE.

SAFE COMMUNITIES ACT: WHY? ▸ Immigration is civil; not criminal. ▸ Massachusetts is the only state in New England to have 287(G) and we have four: Bristol, Barnstable Plymouth counties, and the Department of Corrections. ▸ Lunn Decision re: Detainers. ▸ Police officers shouldn’t do ICE’s job for them.

DRIVERS LICENSE BILL ▸ Enable all qualified state residents to apply for a standard Massachusetts driver’s license, regardless of immigration status.

DRIVERS LICENSE BILL: WHY? ▸ Tested and insured drivers make the roads safer for everyone. ▸ Driving is essential to mobility in Massachusetts, especially outside Greater Boston. ▸ Immigrant families risk being torn apart every time they drive.
