Proposition 99 Funding On November 8, 1988, Californians approved the Tobacco Tax and Health Protection Act (Proposition 99). Five cents of the 25 -cent tax is dedicated to tobacco control efforts: • Fund and coordinate local programs • Develop media campaigns • Provide tobacco-related evaluation and surveillance On November 8, 2016, California voters approved the Tobacco Tax Increase Initiative (Proposition 56), which increases the cigarette tax by $2. 00 per pack, and an equivalent increase on other tobacco products and electronic cigarettes, bringing the total tobacco tax up to $2. 87 per pack of cigarettes.
MAJOR GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE: to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, third hand smoke, tobacco waste, and other tobacco products; to reduce the availability of tobacco and limit tobacco promoting influences directed toward youth; to collaborate with diverse partners to promote a “community norm change” and to provide educational resources on cessation as well as promoting the California Smokers’ Helpline. 1 -800 -NO-BUTTS (1 -800 -662 -8887)
