SIR MACKENZIE BOWELL & DR. ROBERTA BONDAR Sir Mackenzie Bowell is a former Prime Minister that lived in Belleville. Dr. Roberta Bondar was the first Canadian woman to go to space.
Point 1 � � Sir Mackenzie Bowell settled in Belleville, when he was young he started an apprenticeship with the local newspaper. By 1848 Bowell became the owner of the newspaper company. In 1971 Dr. Roberta Bondar was awarded an Ontario Graduate Fellowship.
Point 2 � � In 1858, Sir Mackenzie Bowell joined the Belleville Rifle Company which was a company of 65 men and served with them guarding the border of Upper Canada During the American Civil War. Dr. Roberta Bondar won the Vanier Award for her selection as an outstanding young Canadian by the Jaycees of Canada in 1985.
Point 3 � � Sir Mackenzie Bowell served well in his ministerial duties, and was elevated to the title of prime minister of Canada upon the death of Prime Minister John Thompson In 1992 Dr. Roberta Bondar was awarded honorary degrees from the following University's: Saint Mary's University, Mc. Master University, The University of Regina, the University of Calgary, the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto.
