Introduction I decided to do my topic on sinkholes because I think this subject is interesting. Here are some FACTS: A sinkhole is a hole or opening in the earth’s surface that is formed due to water erosion below the surface. Sinkholes may vary in size from very small to thousands of feet both in diameter and depth. (Harris, David) Sinkholes may be formed gradually or suddenly! Taylorsville Sinkhole These are pictures I took of a sinkhole that happened in Taylorsville, UT on 5400 s and 3200 w. This was about a week after the sinkhole was closed. It occurred on April 26 th. It was about 10 -20 ft deep and 5 ft in diameter. -(Mc. Carthy, Christine)

Chicago Sinkhole Recent news showed that a sinkhole was formed in Chicago and swallowed 3 cars. It occurred April 23 rd. I have some family that lives in Chicago close by where this occurred, they where surprised as to how much damage a sinkhole can do. Even though they don’t occur often, they can be dangerous and be life threatening when they do happen!

How to prevent sinkholes What can we do to prevent these sinkholes from forming? . . . Even though there will be sinkholes created naturally we can stop others from forming if we redirect or block water, treat underground lime stones, avoid construction on wetlands, and recycling water run off. (Helicon foundation repair). Those are some ways to help avoid sinkholes.
