�Over one billion people around the world are affected by violence not related to conflicts, according to a report released on Wednesday. �The first Global Status Report on Violence Prevention has been jointly issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). �It says that while the majority of murder victims are men, women and children suffer from physical and sexual violence, consequences that often last a lifetime.

�Dr Etienne Krug who deals with non- communicable diseases, disability, violence and injury prevention at WHO says there are 475, 000 murders in the world each year. �"Four out of five of these homicide victims are men. What's important to stress, however, is that a lot of violence in the family and the community does not end up in necessarily in death but affect many other people with many consequences. One in four children reports having been physical abused in the world. One in three women has been a victim of physical sexual intimate partner violence in her lifetime. " (24") �Dr Krug said that hundreds of thousands more young people, often males, are victims of non-fatal violence ending up in hospital emergency departments. �One in 17 older people report having been abused
