Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Learning Objectives Able to simplify

Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Learning Objectives: • Able to simplify an expression involving multiplication • Begin to start expanding brackets

Your turn… Simplify the following expressions. Copy the question into your workbook, writing the answer next to it. 1. a + b 2 a + b 2. 3 a – 2 a + 4 b + b a + 5 b 3. 8 a + 5 a – 6 a 7 a 4. 12 b + 5 a + 3 a – 8 b 8 a + 4 b 5. 4 a + 6 b + 7 c + 9 a – 2 b – c 13 a + 4 b + 6 c 6. 9 x a 9 a 7. 13 x b 13 b 8. g x h gh 9. 9 x j x j 9 j 3 10. 6 x p x q x p x 2 12 p 2 q

Expanding Brackets • Expanding brackets is often called “multiplying out” brackets because we use multiplication to get rid of the brackets.

Expanding Brackets • To expand a bracket, multiply the term outside the bracket by everything inside the bracket x 5(a + 3) x 5 a + 15

Expanding Brackets 7(n + 6) 8(p – 3)

Your turn… • Expand the following brackets: a) b) c) d) e) f) g) 4(x + 5) 3(y + 9) 5(a – 2) 11(r – 4) a(b + 3) n(n + 5) p(8 – p) 4 x + 20 3 y + 27 5 a - 10 11 r – 44 ab + 3 a n 2 + 5 n 8 p – p 2
