Simple Machines Webquest Joan Flannery 8 th grade /Science
Introduction Humans are by nature lazy…we really do NOT like doing hard work! But, we do like creating ways to make our lives easier. Simple Machines have been invented over time to make our lives easier (less work). In this webquest, you will investigate the various simple machines, learn how to recognize them and learn how each functions to make work easier. Then, you will design and make your own product that incorporates 2 or more simple machines that makes work easier. Good Luck!
Task You will research and organize information about the 7 simple machines into a chart/diagram that could be helpful for others to use to learn about simple machine. You will then test your knowledge by reviewing, drawing and evaluating some of Leonardo da Vinci’s mysterious machines for the presence of simple machines. Now that you have mastered simple machines, you will design and create a product that incorporates more than 1 simple machine and justify how it has a mechanical advantage (makes work easier). You will have the opportunity to present your product to the class if you so choose.
Process Data Collection: You will create a chart/diagram that explains the 7 simple machines. The chart/diagram needs to include: 1. the name of each simple machine 2. a diagram of each simple machine 3. 2 analogous, everyday items that are examples of the simple machine 4. 2 or more words that we connect to the simple machine to give it meaning 5. the simple machines mechanical advantage (how it makes work easier) Use the following website to help you create your chart/diagram: www. mos. org/sln/leonardos. Process Go to the following web site: www. mos. org/sln/leonardos. Workshop. html Investigate Leonardo’s Mysterious Machinery. Choose on of da Vinci’s mysterious machines, and evaluate it for the presence of simple machines. Diagram the mysterious machine and label all the simple machines you can identify. Go to Gadget Anatomy and assess your knowledge of simple machines. You are now ready to design and create your own ‘product’. Your product must utilize at least 2 simple machines and must have a mechanical advantage.
