Simile Reminder A simile is a way of describing something by comparing it to something else using ‘like’ or ‘as’. • Her eyes are like stars and her lips are like roses. • The car was as fast as a cheetah
Now you try… Finish the similes: The night was as black as …. The fireworks were colourful like … The book was as exciting as… Greece was hot like … The doll’s face was as smooth as …
Why? Why do we use similes and adjectives? When you are describing something, you are trying to create a picture in the reader’s mind. Similes can help you to do this. They are most often used in STORIES and POEMS.
See How It Works • The dog was big and fierce. • Now if we add adjectives and similes… • The black, scruffy dog was as big as a wolf and fierce like a very angry bear. • Isn’t that better? • The house was beautiful. • The ancient house was beautiful like an old fashioned painting.

Mom's Embrace By Michele Meleen My mom is like a cloud, comfortable and strong. I am like a raindrop she keeps safe and sound. When I am fully formed she'll let me go dropping into the world like a raindrop to the ground.
Like Stars in the Sky By Michele Meleen Friends are like the stars in the sky, always there even when you can't see them. They shine brightly in dark times, guiding me as the North Star does for travellers. In daylight, they blend in, a natural part of my every day.
Before the Storm By Kelly Roper The air was heavy like a wet towel that needed to be rung out, And the thunderheads began to rumble like an angry volcano. The wind stirred up in fury like a swarm of locusts suddenly taking flight, And then the heavens opened and drenched the thirsty earth.
Sadness By Stacy Zeiger Sadness is. . . As bleak as the sky when it's cloudy and gray As rough as the sea on a windy day As tough as the skin on an elephant's trunk As stinky as the smell of an angry skunk As dark as the sky on a starless night And it stings just as much as an animal's bite.
As as the sky when it’s As as the sea on a As as the skin on a As as the smell of a As as the sky on a And it just as much as
Kennings Learning Objective: To write a kenning about an animal.
A kenning is a way of describing something using clues rather than just saying what it is. Each line is two words long (not including the ‘a’). A heat giver A light maker
The word kenning comes from a Viking phrase which means: “A two worded phrase describing an object, emotion, person or animal” It is like a ‘mini riddle’ used to describe something.
Here is an example of a kenning about a cat: A paw licker A day dreamer A milk drinker A ball chaser A dog hater A mouse chaser A stroke lover
Lets see if you can guess what these kennings are describing A great jumper A water drinker A straw eater A strong walker A race runner
A ball chaser A crowd pleaser A pitch diver A corner taker A goal scorer A mate hugger
A word holder A story teller A best seller A page turner A cliff hanger A fantasy holder
It is not as hard as it seems For your kennings I want you to follow this pattern: Start each kenning with ‘A’. Then you need to use a noun = thing, person, place Finally you need to link the noun with a verb (doing word) and add ‘er’ on the end. This turns it into an ‘er’ noun. e. g. A music player A text sender A people connector What could this be?
Think about what the subject does, eats, how it moves etc. For example a baby – I’ve listed a few things that remind me of a baby: Never quiet ü Blows raspberries ü Has a dummy ü Drinks milk ü Doesn’t want Mummy and Daddy to sleep ü This becomes…………
A peace breaker A raspberry blower A dummy sucker A milk drinker guzzler A sleep depriver
