Faculty of Transport History The studies in the field of transport began at the Silesian University of Technology in 1969. Originally, they were carried out in Transport and Communication Unit of Mechanical and Power Engineering Faculty. In 1974 the Institute of Transport and Communication, operating as a faculty, was established. In 1984 the Institute of Transport was organized. In 1992 the University structure was reorganized what resulted in combining the Institute with the Faculty of Materials Science, Metallurgy, Transport and Management that was newly established in Katowice. Due to the fast development of teaching and scientific base as well as enlarging number of teaching staff, on the 1 st of September 2002 the Institute of Transport was turned into the Faculty of Transport following the resolution of the Senate. The Faculty employs 16 professors and associate professors as well as 52 Ph. Ds. The Faculty conducts scientific research in the following areas: transport nets optimization, transport logistics, microprocessor technique and simulation tests in transport, mathematical modelling of combustion processes in engines, alternative fuels usage, wearing out of transport machines’ elements, supporting computer designing transport machines’ units, vibroacoustic diagnosis of machines and vehicles, dynamics of vehicles’ suspensions, applying numerical methods in designing and optimizing wheel units and wheel-rail system, telematics and transport safety. Council of Faculty has the right of assignment of a scientific degree of Ph. D on a discipline „Construction and maintenance of machines". Structure: Department of Automotive Vehicle Service Department of Automotive Vehicle Construction Department of Logistics and Mechanical Handling Department of Railway Engineering Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering The BSc study programmes are 3, 5 year long (7 semesters), and most MSc study programmes are 1, 5 year long (3 semesters).

Organisation of Studies on Faculty of Transport 3. Operating and Maintenance of Rail Vehicles

Organisation of Studies on Faculty of Transport 3. Operating and Maintenance of Rail Vehicles The graduates of First Degree Studies for specialty - “The Operation of Railway Vehicles” will be prepared to operate within the scope of research and engineering work in the following fields of activity, namely: The graduate after completing the aforementioned specialization is prepared and able to solve the passenger and freight transport both development and functioning related problems with an emphasis on railway transport. The person possesses the knowledge as well as the skills to use the computer programs based on the Finite Element Method called FEM, which is intended to design of the vehicles, machines and equipment elements. The graduate acquires both knowledge and skills concerning the proper selection of the diagnostic systems for both railway vehicles , basics for design of measuring lines and finally measuring signals analysis of the technical diagnostics. He can define the specific requirements concerning railway vehicles diagnostics. He is familiar with the signaling systems of the railway traffic, and he is also qualified in the range of issues of the safety systems in the railway transport and in the fundamental notions connected with the principles of logistic supply chain functioning. The graduate has got the knowledge of planning as well as carrying out of maintenance processes at the level of the P 1 -P 5. Simultaneously, he is ready to study further i. e. at the level of the second degree studies 4.
