WHAT ARE 'SILENT LETTERS'? A silent letter is a letter that appears in a particular word, but does not correspond to any sound in the word's pronunciation.

Letter D Letter E D is silent when it appears before the letter N and then also before the letter G. • before N: Wednesday, handkerchief • before G: Cadge If E happens to be at the end of a word, it is generally not pronounced. Examples: Able, Challenge, Bible
