Signals Refresher Training
S. O. C. Signals • In this clinic, we will be reviewing the basic signal aspects we use on the S. O. C. • We will be seeing various signal scenes on the layout. For each scene, we will be asking: – What is this signal aspect? What does it mean? – Where on the layout is this signal located?
What does this mean?
CLEAR Dwarf Meaning: Proceed Allowed Speed: up to track speed
What does this mean?
APPROACH Proceed, prepared to stop at the next signal.
What does this mean?
STOP Dwarf Meaning: Stop
And, this?
So, what does this mean?
CLEAR Meaning: Proceed
And, this?
APPROACH Proceed, prepared to stop at the next signal.
Here’s something new:
RESTRICTING Dwarf Proceed at restricted speed (15 MPH); prepared to stop short of train, obstruction or within one-half of range of visibility.
OK, now let’s look at the exit from a siding:
Mainline: CLEAR Siding: STOP Dwarf The train crew needs to know which track they are on!
Another aspect:
Mainline: STOP Siding: SLOW CLEAR Dwarf What does Slow Clear mean ? !?
SLOW CLEAR Dwarf Proceed, at slow speed (15 MPH) within interlocking limits or through turnouts. Do not exceed 15 MPH until clear of interlocking or turnouts.
And, related to Slow Clear is this signal:
SLOW APPROACH Dwarf Look! I’m Flashing! Proceed at slow speed (15 MPH) within interlocking limits or through turnouts, prepared to stop at next signal. Do not exceed 15 MPH.
But, what if you see this?
RESTRICTING Dwarf Not Flashing! Proceed at restricted speed (15 MPH); prepared to stop short of train, obstruction or within one-half of range of visibility.
And, what about this?
AND NOW. . . Some of the less-frequently seen signals:
What does this mean?
APPROACH MEDIUM Dwarf Proceed, approaching the next signal at medium speed (30 MPH).
And finally, how about this?
APPROACH SLOW Dwarf Proceed, approaching the next signal at slow speed (15 MPH).
