Sigmund Freud: Psychoanalysis Simply Explained

Freud’s Belief Explaining my behavior to myself/others does NOT offer a true account of our motivations as we are conscious of this mental activity By rationalizing conflict hiding true reason (subconscious) So…if I was doing wrong, then the explanation I offer does not reveal my truest motivations. Thus, studying the mind’s structure and function in relation to motivations and behaviors is SUPER IMPORTANT to Freud. PSYCHOANALYSIS

The Iceberg Model of Freud’s Theory (topographical) Freud places much emphasis on the unconscious mind as the real cause of most behaviors. This is super hard to see and to be

The Iceberg Model of Freud’s Theory (structural) EGO – reality. (operating within both aware/unaware) To satisfy demands in a safe and socially acceptable way. (operates within both conscious/unconscious level). The Mediator. ID – Biological Instinct! Both life (eros) and death (thanatos). Instincts towards survival. Eros – productive. Thanatos – destructive. SUPEREGO – Morality! (behave in a socially responsible manner) Making sure moral standards are followed.

Working with Psychic Apparatus Freud acknowledges that conflicts will arise from these three apparatus! To all function in harmony, would be ideal, but in reality, this is nearly impossible. Why is this important to consider? Freud would argue that each one of our physic apparatus makes demands of the others. Many times having these demands being incompatible with each other manifests itself into a basic human dilemma = inner conflict.

So… ID says… I want this girl to be for the rest of my life. SUPEREGO says… But she is currently with someone else right now! EGO says…Let’s first build a friendship and not jump to any conclusions yet. See where this goes and remain composed.
