Global Environment Facility (GEF) GEF is the financial Mechanism of the UNFCCC GEF Work includes : Biodiversity, Chemicals and Waste, Climate Change, Forests, International waters, Land Degradation, Amazon, Commodities, Fisheries, Food Security, Illegal Wildlife Trade, Sustainable Cities, Blended Finance, Capacity Building Imitative for Transparency (CBIT), Capacity Development, Civil Society Organisation, Country Support Programme, GEF Small Grant Programme, Gender, Indigenous Peoples, Knowledge and Learning and the Private Sector It “assists” parties to meet their obligations to the UNFCCC Under the Paris Agreement (PA), Sierra Leone developed her NDC which heighted our proposed undertaking in meeting our obligation to the PA. The GEF gives direct support to parties through implementing entities which may be Multilateral (MIE) or National (NIE) The bulk goes to government organisation and a small part to nonstate actors in what is known as Small Grant Programme s (SGPs)

The Key Elements- Paris Agreement • The elements of the agreement in decision-/CP. 21 are: • Emission reduction target achievement and modalities in what was code named the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) before the signing and thereafter NDC • Mitigation • Adaptation • Finance and means of implementation • Capacity Building (CB) • Technology Transfer (TF) • Loss and damage • other like education, public awareness and sanitization ( formally article 6 in KP) and Response Measures (articles 3, 4. 9 and 10)

Component of the NDC 1 a/4 Longtime Mitigation Strategy (MSs) MS 1: Institutionalization of coordination, monitoring, reporting and verification of climate change issues by strengthening the Environment Protection Agency for effective and efficient provision of technical policy advice to the Government and people of Sierra Leone for relevant decision making in transitioning to green economic growth. MS 2: Transformation of the National Meteorological Services of Sierra Leone and strengthening of Climate Change Early Warning System of Sierra Leone MS 3: Promotion of energy efficiency, enhanced management and expansion of the energy mix through uptake of renewable energy sources (Solar, Wind, Hydro, Biomass) particularly in the rural areas of Sierra Leone.

Mitigation Components of the NDC 1 b/4 MS 4: Enhancement of waste management systems at all levels to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions under the category so as to improve health of both humans and animals and reduce global warming. MS 5: Diversification of economic growth through strengthened transport sub-sector, particularly the infrastructure to contribute to the reduction of regional and global emissions of greenhouses and build a stable economy. MS 6: Adoption and application of climate-smart and conservation agriculture through best agricultural practices that enhance soil fertility and improve crop yield

Component of the NDC 2 a/4 Adaptation Component Core Strategy (ACSs) AS 1: Estimation, in a sustainable manner, of Sierra Leone’s contribution to global warming and climate change. AS 2: Management of rangelands and pastures by managing grazing systems and grazing intensity, fire management and pasture rehabilitation. AS 3: Integrated management of crops and Livestock management. AS 4: Restoration of degraded lands with high production potential AS 5: Management of coastal and fisheries resources through promotion of non-destructive fishing techniques to maintain resilience of marine ecosystems. AS 6: Promotion and facilitation of early warning and disaster preparedness system.

AS 10: Create enabling environment for the resilience of private sector investment, demonstrate an operational business case.
