Should you be allowed to wear the kirpan? Match the 5 K being described with its name. Add a reason Sikhs wear it. 1 Kesh A Steel bracelet Lesson 1 Who are the Gurus? 2 Kara B Dagger Lesson 2 What is sewa? 3 Kangha C Uncut hair Lesson 3 The Khalsa D White shorts 4 Kaccha Lesson 4 The 5 Ks E Comb 5 Kirpan Lesson 5 Wearing religious clothing Lesson 6 Assessment Lesson 7 Gurdwara Lesson 8 Knowledge Test Lesson 9 STW
Task • Today we are going to look at whether you feel bringing a kirpan to school is acceptable. • We’ll do this by looking at two articles and using them to develop our opinion
Tasks: In your groups read and discuss the two articles, make notes about what the issues are that have been raised. In your work books write down: 1 What the 5 K’s are and what they symbolise. 2 Why some places, such as schools and businesses may not wish for pupils/staff to wear parts of the 5 K’s. 3 Why a Sikh would argue that the 5 K’s should be allowed to be worn at all times. 4 Draft a letter to the School in Rotherham (article one) arguing either that she should be allowed to wear the kirpan at school or should not. Remember to mention both sides of the argument and then to conclude with your own opinion.
