Short Story. Task 1 – Developing Ideas for Screen. Group: Boo Chris Dan
Part 1 – Boo Idea Development • Plot Chosen: Quest • We wanted the story to have a ‘Serious’ theme. • Slight fantasy in theme– Where the fantasy would be evident more in the Animation rather than the place it was set. • The point of the quest would be ‘Finding family member’ told from a lost child’s perspective as we thought that the way they perceive situations would be an interesting concept to work with. • Location – Shopping Centre. • Animation: Exaggeration in the Animation style as the child’s imagination gets erratic. • Plot: A Child is lost in a shopping centre. The story told from the child’s perspective of how he views going through the situation of being separated from his mother.

Part 2: The Main Synopsis (Conducted by Daniel Dickenson) • • • The sequence begins with the camera angle focusing on a small child, whilst viewers catch a glimpse of his mother- from the left elbow down, as he holds her hand. The young boy accidentally lets go his mother’s hand, resulting in him losing her in the crowded shopping centre. As the child is left alone, fearful and anxious, viewers begin to visualise ‘life behind the child’s eye. ’ The adults begin to lose their usual colour, facial identity and their frameworks begin to narrow whilst increasing significantly in height; as a result, the child becomes much more terrified. Many lean down to the child, concerned about his general welfare. Due to the fact that he perceives the adults of an intimidating nature, he gradually backs away. The camera angle then switches from a worm-eye to a birds-eye camera shot also in monochrome, exaggerating the severity and anxiety of the small child, upon losing his mother. Just as the small child believes that all hope is lost, in attempt to find his mother, his facial expressions transform from panic and fear, to a combination of surprise and happiness. We hear the sentence “There you are, I’ve been looking for you for all this time!” delivered from a female voice. The female character is shortly revealed to be the child’s mother as she is slightly crouched down with her arms wide open; at this stage, the mother’s identity is shown to full extent. The sequence draws to an end with the mother and son walking away, hand in hand, from the shot, as they blend in with the rest of the crowd.
