WRITER’S BACKGROUND AND SETTING � � Name: Leong Siew Yue / Sie Yue Killingliy Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya (now west Malaysia) in a cantonese-speaking family Married in 1963 and moved to England in 1968 Died: 8 June 2004 EDUCATION ü Study at University of Malaya WORK Teacher : ü - In 1961 teach in school while still student of UM ü - After graduate she taught in English Language, Literature, Phonetics and Linguistic at the UM ü - Taught English and other subjects at St. John’s Institution, Kuala Lumpur, and La Salle School, Petaling Jaya ü - In 1970, she taught Linguistic and Phonetics in school of English, University of Neweastle ü - From 1972 -1980, she was Lecturer, at St. Mary’s College , Fenham, where she taught linguistic, English Languange and Literature and supervised teaching in schools ü Siew Yue also active in create and performing arts : wrote poetry, drew competently and play flute ü She also studied ballet, take an active interest in dance including choreography
THEMES Arranged marriages which are highly considered and respected by Indian Ceylonese families. It is considered as a dignity and a symbol of family honor. It also potrays the obedience and respect of the children to their parents. The story tells us how stubborn the parents are where marriages are concerned. They think it is their prerogative to choose the right match for their son or daugther. Though the parents actually arranged the marriage between Rukumani and Devanayagam. They cancelled it after knowing that Ruku and Deva are in love with each other.
