n Introduction: Cold and wet outside, England, Sergeant Morris returned from India, Set in a cozy house belonging to the White family, Sergeant Morris has a monkey’s paw, the White family: Herbert, Mr. and Mrs. White n Initiating Action: Mr. White takes the paw, even though Sergeant Morris discourages it. n Rising Action: Mr. White wishes for 200 pounds, Herbert dies as a result, they get the money, Mrs. White wants Herbert back so Mr. White makes a wish for him to return n Climax: There is knocking at the door that Mr. and Mrs. White think is coming from Herbert/ zombie Herbert
n Falling Action: Mr. White wishes that Herbert would go back to the grave, Mr. White goes downstairs to check n Resolution: When Mrs. White opens the door, they see an empty street
Short Story Terms n Foreshadowing: This is a device which hints or warns of events to happen later in the story. Foreshadowing can prepare the reader for the climax, resolutions or changes in character. It can also serve to heighten anticipation by hinting at coming events. n Example: Bambi’s mother warns him that there is no greater danger in the forest than mankind. n Can you think of examples from “The Monkey’s Paw”?
Short Story Terms n Imagery: Choosing words to create a strong picture or image in the reader’s mind.
