What is a Shinigami? Shinigami is the Japanese statement for God of Death. A Shinigami is the Japanese equivalent to the American, Grim Reaper. A difference of the two is Shinigami are plentiful and often work in teams of two, while the Grim Reaper is just one spirit.

Where are Shinigami mentioned? Shinigami are built into the plots of two popular anime’s; Death Note and Bleach. In Death note a Shinigami carries a notebook called a Death Note. A death note holds the power to kill anyone who’s name is written on its pages. Shinigami in Death Note take the remaining years of life from who is killed from their Death Note. In this anime Shinigami also have a very strong love for apples. In Bleach a Shinigami is a Soul Reaper, a guardian of souls going through the circle of transmigration. Bleach Shinigami were known as balancers in ancient times, they purify the Hollows who do evil in the world of the living and ensure a safe crossing of souls.

Mythology The legend of Shinigami started in the early eighteenth century. Their existence was influenced by the traditional Shinto, Buddhist, and Taoist beliefs. In Japanese culture a Shinigami is also believe to be a worker of Kami –the Japanese transition for God- or an angel. Those who refuse thought of a Shinigami being an angel, declare that a Shinigami is a god that invites humans toward death. Japanese legends stat that one of the very few responsibilities of a Shinigami is to insure people die at the correct time and lead them to the afterlife.

Powers of a Shinigami are said to have magical abilities which assist in the killing of humans. The abilities include: Death Sense, Black Sand control, Death vision Shinigami can see the remaining lifespan of a person by looking at them-, Invisibility, Great Speed, Great Scythe skills, and Immortality.

Weaknesses. Shinigami are immortal but still possess weaknesses. The four weaknesses of a Shinigami are: silver, silver plated weapons, holy water, and holy fire. Being an immortal creature means Shinigami lack any other weaknesses.

Appearance As Shinigami are mentioned in many myths and legends, they have two main looks. The first is nicely dressed, wearing a suit and a top hat. The second and most common style is ragged, dark, torn up clothing to make their pale skin and tall skinny bodies stand out. Shinigami are also said to have wings and wear studded belt and earrings.

Invention to death Shinigami lead people to death, but why would anyone accept and willingly walk into death? Shinigami must induce a feeling of wanting to die, making death sound somewhat inviting. The killing is not done by the Shinigami directly, Shinigami are just there to lead people to the underworld. It is also believed that they are only visible to people when their time is nearly up.
