Terminology �Arc Welder- machine that produces current for welding �Arc- a continuous discharge of electricity through the air across a gap in the circuit �Welder-a machine that welds �Electrodes- in arc welding a metal welding rod that is coated with flux and used with an electrical welder �Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)-welding with an electrical power as a source of heat and rods covered with flux which form a gaseous shield around the molten metal until is solidifies (Stick welding or Arc Welding)

Terminology �Slag-the material formed when burning steel combines with oxygen �Amperage-a measure of the rate of flow of current in a conductor �Duty Cycle-the proportion of time a motor or welder can run with out overheating �Ampere (A)- the unit of measure for amperage also know as an amp �Conductor-any material that will permit electrons (electricity) to move through it.

Terminology �Volt- (V) the unit of measure for voltage �Voltage- a measure of electrical pressure �Watt (W)-the unit of measure of wattage �Wattage- a measure of energy available or work that can be done using one ampere at one volt �Transformers- a device that converts high voltage from high power lines to 230 volts for home and farm installations, device used to step current up or down

Terminology �Alternating Current (AC)-current that reverses its current 60 times per second � 60 cycle current-electricity that alternates direction of flow 60 times per second �Generator- a device that produces direct current �Direct Current- (DC) current that flows in one direction �Polarity-direction of electrical flow in a circuit �Straight (negative) Polarity (SP)-DC current flowing in one drection, the opposite of reverse polarity

Terminology �Reverse (positive) polarity (RP)-DC current flowing in the opposite direction from straight polarity to reverse the direction of the current �Electrode holder- a spring loaded device with insulated handles used to grip welding electrodes �Ground clamp- connector used to attach a cable, wire or object to a ground source �Chipping Hammer-a hammer with a sharp edge and or point used to remove slag from a welding bead

Terminology �End marking-the color coated marking at the end of a welding electrode �Spot marking- the color coded marking on the bare surface of the exposed metal rod of a welding electrode �Group markings- the markings on a package of welding electrodes that indicates the type of electrodes within the package �Tensile Strength- the amount of tension of pull a weld can withstand �Carbon arc torch- a device that holds 2 carbon sticks and produces a flame from the energy of an electric welder
