Hockey Canada Skills Academy Objectives Any male or female player registered, or wanting to become registered, on a Minor Hockey Association team who is attending a school with a HCSA program is eligible Any player regardless of skill level may register in a HCSA Any player, regardless of family income status, may register (depending on scholarship program criteria or school policy) Player’s, while enrolled in a HCSA, must maintain a behaviour standard as determined and monitored by the school or school board in order to remain in the program

HWDSB’s Hockey Academy Objectives To provide students in the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board with the opportunity to earn credits in a hockey focused environment On-Ice Skill Development – The focus is on development of all core fundamental skills (i. e. skating, puck control, shooting, passing, and small area games) Off-Ice Skill Development – The focus is on the continuation of core fundamental skills learned on-ice through a variety of activities (i. e. weight training, resistance training, floorball, plyometrics, and a variety other sports) Classroom Focus – The focus will be the health living curriculum.

Program Code of Conduct The following are the expectations that every student in the HWDSB Hockey Skills Academy will adhere too Attitude The biggest stumbling block to players succeeding in hockey is a poor attitude Players that rapidly progress are those individuals that possess a strong work ethic, always open to learn, humble, and have quiet confidence Humble – modest, not grand or important, respectful, and courteous (ie. Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, Steve Nash etc. ) School Players in the program will be held to the highest standard This course is a privileged program in the HWDSB Players are expected to attend all classes during the day and maintain passing grades

On-Ice Training “Mastery of any sport skill will take a minimum of 10, 000

On-Ice Training “Mastery of any sport skill will take a minimum of 10, 000 hours” The on-ice portion of the program will be the most fun and beneficial part of your day BE ON TIME! Ice time costs money The focus of all ice sessions will be the improvement of your core skills (Skating, Shooting, Stickhandling, Passing and Small Area Games) Typical lessons follow this agenda: Warm-up/Shoot Around 10 min Full Ice Lesson 10 - 15 min Stations and Circuits 15 - 20 min Scrimmage/Games 10 min We have wide range of abilities on the ice, it is critical that everyone has respect for each other The course allows you to challenge yourself to improve your individual skills

Off-Ice Training The off-ice portion of the program is full of a variety of hockey specific training techniques. Our training will take place in the gym, weight room, fields at the school Players will be tested three times per semester off-ice. The core of our off-ice training will be hockey related with some other sports done on occasion to allow the player the chance to cross train. Some of the key components of the off-ice program include: Fitness Testing European Floorball Circuit Training Reaction Ball Training Resistance Training (Pulling Tires, Chutes and Bungees) Weight Workouts Plyometrics and Core Training Core Skill Workouts (Stickhandling, Passing, Shooting, Small Area) Other Sports include Lacrosse, Handball, Dodgeball, Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, and Basketball
