Shell Science Lab Challenge Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge Overview • Shell, Carolina Biological Supply Company, and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) have partnered to recognize outstanding elementary, middle and high school programs for their exemplary approaches to science lab instruction utilizing limited school and laboratory resources. • The Challenge will: – Showcase the work of teachers who share their exemplary approach to teaching science with minimal lab equipment. – Award teachers/schools with additional tools, resources, and rich professional development opportunities needed to support highquality science teaching to strengthen their existing capabilities - The Regional Challenge is a new program that includes K-12 teachers in specific areas where Shell has operations in the US Promoting 3 Excellence and Innovation in Science Teaching and Learning for All

The Award Shell Science Lab Challenge Grand Prize Winning school prize package (1) valued at $20, 000 includes: • Designation as an "NSTA/Shell Science Lab Challenge Grand Prize Winner, " school banner, and citation; • $300 gift certificate to the NSTA Bookstore; • One year NSTA membership for two teachers; • Registration for up to two teachers to attend the national conference on science education; • Recognition and attendance at the Shell Reception and Teacher Awards Gala at the national conference on science education; • NSTA Learning Center subscription for two teachers; • $5, 000 Shell Science Lab grant to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resources; • $5, 000 gift certificate outfitted by Carolina Biological Supply Company, to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resource books through their company; and • Expense-paid trip for a second teacher from the school to attend the NSTA National Conference on Science Education Promoting 6 Excellence and Innovation in Science Teaching and Learning for All
The Award Shell Science Lab Challenge The National Finalists and Grand Prize Winner will be honored at the NSTA Teacher Awards Gala at NSTA’s National Conference on Science Education in Atlanta, GA March 15 – 18, 2018. Eligibility Shell Science Lab Challenge • Teachers of science in grades 6 -12, in the 50 United States, the U. S. jurisdictions, and Canada • The jurisdictions include Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, Department of Defense Schools, and the U. S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U. S. Virgin Islands) • Teachers may submit an entry as an individual applicant or as a team of two teachers • A school may submit an unlimited number of applications • A teacher is limited to one application per year (whether submitting as an individual or team applicant) Promoting 8 Excellence and Innovation in Science Teaching and Learning for All

Eligibility – Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge • Teachers of science in grades K-12, in the following targeted regions ONLY: • • • Mobile, AL, Martinez, CA (Martinez Unified School District, Mt. Diablo Unified School District), Carson, CA (LAUSD in Carson, Mormon Island, Signal Hill, Van Nuys, Colton, Long Beach), Convent, LA (St. James Parish), Geismar, LA (Ascension Parish), Norco, LA (St. Charles Parish, St. John Parish), New Orleans, LA (Jefferson Parish, Orleans Parish, Terrebonne Parish, and La. Fourche Parish), Monaca, PA (Central Valley, Aliquippa, W. Beaver, Rochester, N. Brighton, Riverside, Beaver Falls, Blackhawk), Deer Park, TX (Deer Park ISD, Pasadena ISD, La. Porte ISD), Kermit, TX (Kermit ISD and Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD), Puget Sound, WA (Anacortes SD, La Conner SD, Mt. Selection Procedure • The Shell Science Lab Challenge Judging Panel will review the received applications on December 15, 2017. • The Judging Panel will select up to 54 districts finalists (including a possible of three district finalists in each of 18 NSTA districts). • The Regional Challenge Judges will select up to 72 regional finalists – Deadline extension April 10, 2018 • The district and regional finalists will be asked to provide additional responses including a short video (3 to 5 minutes) that displays the school’s current science laboratory facilities. 14 Excellence and Innovation in Science Teaching and Learning for All Promoting
Selection Procedure • Only the district finalists of the national Shell Science Lab Challenge will provide further explanation of how winning equipment/resources would make a difference in the applicant’s science teaching and learning experience for students. • The Judging Panel will select up to 18 NSTA district winners. • The Grand Prize Winner and four National Finalists will be selected from the pool of NSTA district winners. • The Regional Challenge Grand Prize winning schools will be selected from the Regional Winner pool. 15 Excellence and Innovation in Science Teaching and Learning for All Promoting

Submission Requirements Completed on-line application which includes: • A narrative describing the applicant’s science laboratory practices and innovative use of limited laboratory equipment and resources (see separate Requirements for Narrative) • A letter of support/validation from principal or other education supervisor who can describe the merit of the applicant’s work, and validate, attest to, or support statements made in the application narrative (1 -2 pages) • Resume or Vita with overview of teaching experience, education, community involvement, and previous awards/recognition (2700 characters = 1 page single spaced; submit Vita for each member of applicant team) 17 Excellence and Innovation in Science Teaching and Learning for All Promoting
Narrative Question One - Science Instructional Strategies Equivalent character count of one paragraph (1000 character count limit): Briefly describe your: • science teaching philosophy • strategies you use to teach science • Exemplar of past grand prize winner: Brown’s teaching philosophy is that you learn science best by experiencing it through conducting investigations. Her current science lab equipment is limited and outdated, while the technological resources are restricted to a shared, grade-level computer cart. This school year Brown had to borrow dissecting tools from her college instructor so students could dissect a fetal pig. During the dissection students were enthusiastic during the experience and about the connections to content previously taught. Brown wants to provide her students with these learning opportunities consistently and not be concerned with how to obtain the materials. She wants to acquire projectbased kits that incorporate inquiry-based activities and critical-thinking skills to create a strong foundation for active learning. 18 Excellence and Innovation in Science Teaching and Learning for All Promoting

Criteria For Judging • Demonstrated: • science inquiry innovation in the middle or high school classroom, with limited equipment and materials (elementary included for Regional Challenge) • impact and engagement with students • need for support to improve science laboratory experiences • Support of middle or high school education science standards (elementary included for Regional Challenge) • Use of safety practices 21 Excellence and Innovation in Science Teaching and Learning for All Promoting

Shell Science Teaching Award • • • Recognizes one outstanding classroom science teacher (K-12) who has had a positive impact on his or her students, school, and community through exemplary classroom science teaching Include resume, teaching schedule, narrative of your exemplary teaching and community support, nomination and letters of recommendation Excerpt from past awardee: “If students are excited about the topic and recognize its relevance to them, they will take the topic to a greater depth. . The real secret is to build on students’ prior knowledge and to weave each topic into more complex activities. ” During 30 years of classroom teaching, he has evolved from a traditional lecturer to a culture -based teacher, including aspects of Hawaiian culture in lessons and labs. Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award • Recognizes seven urban classroom science teachers (K -12) • Include: – Narrative describing a plan of attendance at the national conference.
