SBS transition survey key points that led to Flying Start • Student responses indicated they wanted: – a longer period of induction – enhanced support for university IT systems and awareness of wider support systems (counselling, education & guidance) – more information on what academics expect from students – opportunities to meet 1: 1 with academic staff to discuss issues – mentoring opportunities
Flying Start Academic Programme • 8 timetabled seminars throughout the 1 st semester to orientate new students to the academic expectations of The Business School • Themes – Orientation and getting to know your group, IT systems, PDP and academic skills, reading, writing and marking schemes, the university experience • Supported by 40 academic staff, 35 -40 final year students and professional services staff • Skills based teaching module • Enhanced affinity, course community and retention
