Summary of Act II In the second act we find Mr. Hardcastle is teaching his servant how to welcome his guests expecting the greeting should be decent. One of the servants named Diggory requests Hardcastle not to tell the story of Ould grouse otherwise he will not able to control his laughter. At this Mr. Hardcastle too starts laughing. There comes another question from Mr. Hardcastle who will serve the wine? But none of the servants move. In the mean time, Hardcastle hears a horse and coach driving up and leaves to greet his guests.
Another servant enters, leading Marlow and Hastings to Inn. They are told where they arrive at the moment is Inn. And they start praising and expect to be paid high rate just because its quality. They also lament over what generally it happens turning mansion into an Inn.
After a while they switch into another topic and the discussion goes on about the Marlow’s odd character of behaving as an idiot before a woman of reputed background but on the other hand he is eloquent before lower one and does not hesitate to interact with women like barmaid and common women. Having known the very nature of Marlow he is advised how to address Kate and o avoid looking her in the face and bow low. Marlow Hasting
Marlow admits and tells about his purpose not for himself only but to facilitate a meeting between his friend and the family of Constance, whom Hastings loves. Hastings assures Marlow he is not at all interested in Constance's inheritance and so needs no such meeting, but rather would be perfectly happy with the woman herself.
In the next very moment Mr. Hardcastle arrives and offers them a warm welcome but Tony’s fun has already made their mind he must be the host of this Inn. They are amused by Hardcastle's loquaciousness and the way he speaks about politics as though he were a man of repute.
Now its all preparing for meal and their sense a very strange thing that they cannot get thefood of their own choice even at Inn. Mr. hardcastle does not leave any effort to impress them as he pour the meal including pig with prune sauce and other delicacies, but they rudely diminish the value of such a fine meal and demand "plain eating" like calf's tongue and brains. They want pub food. When he apologizes for lacking such food, they instruct him to bring what he has and decide to retire.
Hasting Now there is meeting of Hasting with Constance and Hasting comes to know About all things which are going on. Hasting persuade her not to reveal and let it be as it is as he is aware with his friend how much shy and stupid he looks before woman of sophistication so it thinks of a plan but Constance does not get ready over.
Constance Hasting Marlow In the mean time there takes place Marlow entrance but he is made him know Kate and Constance are also staying in this Inn and this news made him nervous and beg to arrange meeting for next day but Constance replies it will be like insult.
Constance Hasting Marlow In the very moment, Kate enters and meets Marlow but he looks quite nervouse although he is encouraged by Hasting but it goes all vein.
Now there remains only Kate and Marlow in that room but the conversation does not sustain for a long time. Finally she outs to find Constance.
