Sharing of Best Practices on Integrated Coastal Management
Sharing of Best Practices on Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) in a Context of Adaptation to Climate Change in Coastal Areas: A project for the European Commission (DG Environment) Nov. 2012 – Feb. 2015
Best Practices on ICM and CCA Five parallel tasks A. Gathering an overview of Member State policies and measures B. Preparing a background paper on ICM and CCA C. Updating OURCOAST case studies D. Supporting the integration of OURCOAST with other databases E. Communicating project work
Best Practices on ICM and CCA Task A: fact sheets on Member State policies and measures • Based on desk research and questionnaires • Thank you to all the MS experts who contributed to and reviewed the fact sheets
Best Practices on ICM and CCA Task A: fact sheets on measures for adaptation to climate change in coastal management • 22 fact sheets prepared: – 5 ‘green’ measures – 7 ‘grey’ measures – 10 ‘soft’ measures • Main information sources included EU projects and OURCOAST case studies • Measures to be published on Climate-ADAPT portal and the OURCOAST successor site
Best Practices on ICM and CCA Task B: Background paper on ICM and CCA • Following comments on draft guidance document presented to the June 2014 meeting of ICM and MSP experts in Athens, it was agreed with DG Environment to prepare a background paper • The background document goes a long way towards providing guidance in relation to how ICM can deliver CCA. DG ENV & DG CLIMA will reflect on whether further guidance is needed and, if so, what an appropriate way forward might be in light of the review of the EU CC Adaptation Strategy in 2017
Best Practices on ICM and CCA Task C: Updating OURCOAST case studies • 8 new case studies prepared for OURCOAST successor site and Climate-ADAPT: – – – ICZM vision and strategy in Bulgaria Sigma Plan (Belgium): one overview and two site case studies Šibenik-Knin ICZM Plan incorporating adaptation (Croatia) Beach nourishment, Pontino Littoral (Italy) Aurich, Lower Saxonia (Germany) Smeltalé River in Klaipèda (Lithuania) • Also: existing case studies on adaptation reviewed; possible future case studies on coastal erosion identified
Best Practices on ICM and CCA Task D: Integrating OURCOAST with other platforms • Feasibility study identified MARATLAS and Climate. ADAPT as key platforms for integration • Work on measures and on new case studies was closely integrated with update of Climate-ADAPT
Best Practices on ICM and CCA Task E: Communicating project work • New page prepared for OURCOAST web portal • Participation in Maritime Days and in regional workshops • Project Newsletter
