VOCABULARY! • • Figure, positive space Shape- a 2 dimensional area with a recognizable boundary. Figure- ground- When dividing up a picture, figures are found on top of, or surrounded by ground. (image and background relationship, often called positive and negative shapes, see below!) Ground, Positive shape –in pictures, make up the figure Negative shape- in pictures, make up the ground negative space Organic shape –free forms, or shapes and forms that represent living things having irregular edges, which are different from the regular edges of geometric shapes. Geometric shape – mechanical, humanmade shapes such as squares, triangles, circles, etc. Geometric shapes have regular edges as opposed to the irregular edges of inorganic shapes. Closed forms in paintings and sculpture that have few or no openings or negative shapes. Open forms –forms in paintings and sculpture which emphasize openings, allow space to penetrate.
