Shape theory is using a Circle, Square or Triangle to design things such as characters, logos or other things. How this works is that each shape represents different ‘personality’ aspects. A Circle represents the good/positive. Friendliness, happiness, inner strength and wholeness. A Square represents more neutral. The strong, broad, stubborn, reliable, practical and tough. A Triangle represents the bad/negative. Aggressive, sharp, obnoxious, selfish, mischievous and unreliable.

Mickey Mouse is a good example for what the circle represents as his general shape is mainly made up of circles and ovals. His big eyes give a sense of innocence as well as his big rounded ears and round, almost heart shaped face. His appearance fits perfectly with his bubbly and friendly character who cares deeply about his friends and would sacrifice his self for them. Though Lexaeus is a part of an enemy Organization in his respective game(s), he does represent the square. His body shape and even his head shape is rather square and he has broad shoulders. He is tremendously strong, mentally tough and cunning. He’s not much of a talker and, though I find he represents the square well, there are elements of him that make him fall on the verge of the triangle personality. Hades represents the triangle. As the god of the underworld he is naturally obsessed with the idea of bringing death, especially to Zeus's new found son, Hercules, and anyone who stands in his way or opposes him. He is aggressive, manipulative and cruel. He has a short-temper and can drain the strongest hero to make them weak. His whole general shape of his body, head and even his flame hair and sharp pointed fingers shout aggression. The cool blue colour of his skin and hair tell you he is a cold character, though when he gets mad the cool blue changes to red and red is commonly associated with danger. He also has sharp triangular teeth and a sharp pointed downwards nose. Basically, Hades is a literal walking triangle.

The Process and Concept Behind it. The concept behind this is to be able to break down an image into simple shapes. This helps because when you know what the basic shapes of something are meant to be you can use those shapes to put together an image either of your own or to make copying another image easier. The process of doing it is simple. Get the chosen image into Photoshop and chose a bright colour that’ll stand out from your image. Look at and observe your image. Think about the shapes you can see within the image. And then draw where those shapes are.

Bad Dolores Umbridge is cruel, ruthless and sociopathic. She is one of the most tremendously horrible characters in the HP movies, even if you may not think that at first glance. Her rounded face and curly lock along with her love for pink clothes/ make-up (and cats) makes her appear sweet and harmless when in fact she wishes to take over the school and enjoys physically harming students she believes have done wrong or even for her own amusement. Knuckles is one of Sonics friends and is always there to help him defeat Egg Man and anything else going on, but as good as he is also rather aggressive. He is rude, enjoys violence and tends to shout a lot, even at his friends. His grin is mischievous and he has a lot of spikes going on with his design, obviously considering he is an Echidna. Good Axel (also known as Lea) was a member of an enemy group known as ‘Organization XIII’. They do not have hearts and as such cannot feel emotions. He’s rather witty/sarcastic but not nastily so unless he feels hurt (as he later comes to understand emotions). Though he starts off as a supposed ‘bad guy’ he later ends up realising he’s fighting for the wrong side and starts fighting for the good/light side. His hair is spikey and points back and upwards in every direction. It is also a mixture of red shades and his short eyebrows point sharply downwards. His eyes are narrow and his pupils are small, making them less innocent looking and more piercingthrough-your-soul like. He wears a black, skin tight leather coat and gloves along with black knee high boots and can wield fire. His grin is devilish and he bares his teeth when he does so. (Note: However in the new game with the change in the graphics engine comes the change in appearance and his features look softer and more friendly. )

What are Subverted Conventions? Subverted Conventions are when something or someone, such as a character, is comprised of certain shapes that are opposite to the shapes that should define their/it’s personality. Take Axel here for example; his general shape is made up of triangles which portrays aggressiveness, rude and bad characteristics is general, even though Axel does not fit those descriptions and instead fits the descriptions of what one would match to a circle, or even a square perhaps as he borders on both.
