Realistic Form ⦿ Lifelike and traditional
Abstract Form ⦿ Has realistic traits but altered.
Geometric Form ⦿ Uses basic shapes to create the form
Rectilinear Shapes and Forms Square and rectangle (2 D) and cube (3 D) ⦿ This form is the most commonly used in our homes. ⦿ › Most of our room shapes follow this form, and many pieces of furniture and accessories are also rectilinear. There is danger of this form feeling harsh or monotonous. ⦿ Some examples of square and rectangular shapes used in a house are mirrors, pillows, trays, rugs, windows, and doors. ⦿
Angular shapes and forms Triangles (2 D) and pyramids (3 D) ⦿ Angular forms add a great deal of life to a room. ⦿ › They are more flexible than rectangles because the angles can be manipulated in many ways. › They are the stronger more dominant shape. › Diagonals usually make things look larger. › They also suggest motion and are less common, so they hold attention. ⦿ Some examples of triangular shapes used in homes: lamp shades, Christmas trees, and sloping roofs as angled walls.
Curved Shapes and Forms ⦿ Circles (2 D) and spheres (3 D) ⦿ Curved forms have unique qualities: › They remind us of motion – probably because they remind us of balls and the lines are never ending. › They bring to mind things found in nature: flowers, trees, bodies, or clouds. ⦿ Some examples in a home: Clocks, wreaths, picture frames, tables, chairs, and vases.
Using form in the home ⦿ Form follows function › You wouldn’t want a chair that looks interesting but can’t be sat on. ⦿ Related forms are more agreeable than unrelated forms › The style of the furniture determined by its form. ⦿A gradual change in form smoothly directs the eye
