Where I Fit In
Who I am in a Nutshell I am a product of my education. Until I went to college I didn’t realize I cared so much about gender, race and class. Then I got an extended education in my women’s studies program at San Diego State University and at SUNY Albany in my Nonprofit management program about the differences between genders, races and classes in terms of educational attainment, business attainment and financial attainment. Suddenly I cared a lot about politics and education because I realized how inequitable the distribution of wealth and education is in the United States. I wanted to make a difference. That is when I decided to become a teacher. I wanted to have a safe space classroom and specify I am open to all children because that is super important to me. I also want to be open to children with different abilities as I am differently abled myself so I understand differently what this is like. I am a mom too which is a very important part of who I am, and I have experienced the education system from that side as well which I think will make me a more understanding teacher in the long run. Finally I look a little different; I am part of tattoo culture which I think makes me stand out and maybe not in a good way when it comes to teaching but I am just now starting to navigate that issue. I think this makes me a more open person when it comes to difference and this will make me a better teacher.
