Shadow Photography Homework Project When talking about photography
Shadow Photography – Homework Project When talking about photography the term 'shadow' is used to describe the darkest parts of an image. Manipulation of the lighting and exposure of shadow within an image can be used to add or remove darkness from a scene, dramatically altering the overall feel and depth of a photograph. Here are some photographers who produced work on theme of shadows: Elena Dijour David Basanta Heather Mason
Juliet Ferguson explores how light and shadow can create geometric pattern in her Fine Art photographs. The patterns capture a moment in time as the sun moves across the sky changing the angle of the grids and boxes. Ferguson also investigates how empty spaces, devoid of humans or animals can still have their own stories to tell.
Shadow Photoshoot – Homework Project Task 1: Take at least 30 photos of a range of different types of shadows. Think about experimenting with different types of lighting and angles. Experiment with translucent objects and movement. You may use a smartphone. Task 2: Select a photograph by a shadows photographer and describe it in detail using the Formal Elements and the Photography Visual Analysis helpsheet. Explain how the photograph was taken, the quality and position of the light source and how these techniques inspired your own shadow photography. • Double check that you are taking photos of shadows, NOT silhouettes. • Try creating a still life (mise en scene) with objects against a wall or plain background. Make the most of your photoshoot: • Plan: location, time of day, quality of light • Make a list of types of shot that you need • Make sure that you are able to upload your images • Take a look at the work of Juliet Ferguson for inspiration
