Basic Information • Shackleton was a great man, willing to take risk. He wanted to travel to across Antarctica from west to east. To do so he would need a crew. • His crew consisted of 28 members, including himself and a stowaway.
How Shackleton Picked the Crew! • Most of the members of the crew were picked mainly because of there appearance, and/or looks. • Some were picked because of there ability, talent, potential & determination. • If someone was picked because of there looks, it will say so on there slide.
Sir Ernest Shackleton • Born February 14 th, 1874 • Came from a middle class background, the son of a moderately successful physician. • Joined the British Merchant Navy at age 16. • This was Shackelton’s third expedition to Antarctica. His first was in 1901 as a member of the National Antarctic Expedition led by Robert S. Scott, a British explorer • In 1907, Shackelton led the first expedition, with his goal to reach the pole. He had three companions but ended up having to turn back because of food shortage. • Married a daughter of a wealthy lawyer. • Leader of the expedition • Died January 5 th, 1922.
Frank Wild • Born April 10 th in 1873. • Died August 19 th, 1939. • Has gone on five expeditions to Antarctica. • 2 nd in Command on Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage
Frank Worsley • Born February 22 nd, 1872. • Died February 1 st, 1943. • A New Zealand explorer and sailor. • Captain of Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage
Lionel Greenstreet • Born 1889 • Died January 13, 1979. When he died he was the last survivor of the expedition • First Officer on Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage
Hubert T. Hudson • There is not much information on him nor any pictures. • Navigator on Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage
Thomas Crean • Born July 20 th in 1877. • Died July 27 th in 1938. • Was picked because he was a tall, row-boned, plain spoken Irishman. • Second Officer on Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage.
Alfred Cheetman • Born May 6 th in 1867. • Died August 22 nd in 1918. • His appearance was the opposite of Thomas Crean’s. He was a tiny man. • Was the Third Officer on Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage.
Louis Rickinson. • He was the first engineer on Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage.
A. J. Kerr • There is not much information on him nor any pictures. • Second Engineer on Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage
Dr. Alexander H. Macklin • • Was born in India in 1889. His father was a doctor. Died March 21 st, 1967. On the day Shackleton met him, he asked: “Why are you wearing glasses? ” Dr. Macklin then replied “Many a wise face would look foolish without spectacles. ” • Surgeon on Shackleton’s trans -arctic expedition
Dr. James A. Mcllory • Born November 3, 1879. • Died July 27, 1968. • Earned his medical degree at Birmingham University. • Surgeon on Shackleton’s Expedition.
James M. Wordie • Born April 26, 1889. • Died January 16, 1962. • Geologist on Shackleton’s Expedition.
Leonard D. A. Hussey • Born May 6, 1891. • Full name is: Leonard Duncan Albert Hussey. • Was an English meteorologist, explorer, and archeologist. • Member of the Armed Forces in World War I. • Died 72 years old on February 25, 1964. • Meteorologist on Shackleton’s expedition.
Reginald W. James • • Born January 9, 1891. Son of an umbrella maker. Died in 1964. Nickname on the trip: Gentle Jimmy. • He was the physicist on Shackleton’s expedition.
Robert S. Clark • Born September 11, 1882 in Aberdeen, Scotland • Died September 29, 1950. He was 68 years old at that time. • Occupations he had were; biologist, zoologist, and an explorer. • He was a biologist on the expedition.

Thomas H. Orde-Lees • Born May 23, 1877 in Aachen (what was known as Prussia). • Died December 1, 1958 at age 81. • Motor Expert but later store -keeper for the expedition.
Harry Mc. Neish • Born September 11, 1874. • Real name is Henry Mc. Neish. • Died on September 24, 1930 at age 56. • Known as “Chippy” during the expedition. • Carpenter on the Shackleton’s expedition.
Charles J. Green • • Born in 1889. Died September 26, 1974. Son of a master baker. Was the cook on the Shackleton’s expedition.
Walter How • Born on Christmas day in 1885 in London, England. • Died of cancer on August 5, 1972. • Able Seaman on Shackleton’s expedition.
William Bakewell • Born…unknown. • At age 11 ran away from his home in Joliet, Illinois to Missouri. • Died…unknown. • Able Seaman on the expedition.
Timothy Mc. Carthy • Born in Ireland in 1888. • Died March 16, 1917; only at age 28. • Able seaman of the Trans. Antarctic Expedition.
Thomas Mc. Leod • Little information is known about him. • Able Seaman on Shackleton’s expedition.
John Vincent • Born in Birmingham, England in 1879 (the exact date is unknown). • Died January 19, 1994. • Able seaman on Shackleton’s expedition.
