Seyyed Mohammad Ali Abtahi • Born January, 1958, Mashhad • Theologian, scholar, pro-democracy activist and chairman of the Institute for Interreligious Dialogue • A former Vice President of Iran and a close associate of former President Mohammad Khatami.
Mr. Abtahi was arrested in his own home 4 days after the June 12 disputed elections • He was taken to Jail where he was not given permission to see his attorney, or any family member. • Two days ago his wife was aloud to speak with him for a few minutes. • Abtahi said to his wife he is given a pill that makes him comfortable and oblivious to his surroundings.
Court Conditions • Mr. Abtahi’s attorney – Mr. Nikbakht – was not allowed in the court. • The news media, with the exception of the state-run TV, were barred from the court. • Mr. Abtahi held a piece of paper from which to read his “confessions. ”
I will not repeat his supposed confessions so as not to publicize the wish of Of the court. But I will ask you to look at the next three pictures and judge for yourself.
