Remember Meiosis? http: //www. johnkyrk. com/meiosis. html Meiosis enables sexual reproduction
3 stages of Sexual Reproduction 1) Mating: process by which gametes arrive at the same place at the same time *Requires 2 parents! 2) Fertilization Sperm Cell + Egg Cell Zygote (haploid) (diploid) 3) Development

Think Pair Share • Think: what are some advantages and disadvantages to sexual reproduction? • Pair: talk to a partner and discuss! • Share: discuss as a class
Advantages of Sexual Reproduction • Results in increased genetic diversity • Better chance of survival if change in environment
Disadvantages of Sexual Reproduction • requires energy • need to find a mate • whole chromosome mutations ie) Down Syndrome: extra chromosome #21
Methods of Fertilization 1) External Fertilization: sperm and egg cells join outside of the parents’ bodies ~common in animals and plants that live in water or moist places
External Fertilization • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=VOg. Ao vl 5 fqs
Methods of Fertilization 2) Internal Fertilization: sperm and egg cells join inside the body of the female parent common in birds, mammals, flowering plants, and coneforming plants
DID YOU KNOW? • There are Male and Female Plants? • Plants reproduce sexually? • They use internal fertilization too! Male Heyyy, How you doin ; )? Female

Internal Fertilization Pollination: Form of internal fertilization that occurs in plants. -Pollen: carries sperm cells in a protective case -Ovules: female plant structure containing egg cells

Read Page 207 -211 External Fertilization: Advantages Disadvantages - Requires little energy - Large numbers of offspring produced - Some can survive environmental disasters - Don’t compete with parents Internal Fertilization: Advantages - More offspring survive - because of embryo - protection and parental care - Easily preyed upon - Many don’t survive - can’t protect/care foryoung Disadvantages - more energy to find mate - fewer offspring/zygotes
