What is Migration & Why does it Occur? Learning Outcomes: All Should: With support, will be able to describe what migration is and the different types. They will give examples of 1 -2 push and pull factors. Most should: Be able to explain in more detail about the different types of migration and give detailed examples of the push and pull factors. Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages for an international migration case study, using Mexico and the USA by way of example. Some should: be able to analyse the effects economic migration will have on the Mexico and the USA. Migration l Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. l The movement may be just around a corner to a better house. l How many of you have ever moved house? l It may be from one part of the country to another in search of a job.
l For many people country areas have very little to offer so they move to the towns and cities. l This is called rural to urban migration
OR l For many people a move to a different country holds many attractions. l This is called international migration.
l Immigration is the migration of people into an area. l Emigration is the migration of people out of an area.
Why do people migrate? People migrate for two reasons: 1. To get away from things that they do not like. These are known as push factors. 2. People are attracted to things that they do like. These are called pull factors.

Abdul’s family came from Pakistan to the UK before he was born. This is international migration. James’ family came from Texas to NY as his local school had closed down. This is rural/urban migration. This is Dylan. His family moved from Ipswich to London as his father had found a better job. This is economic migration.
Jasmine’s family are travellers. They often spend the winter in New York and the summer working in LA at theme park. This is temporary or seasonal migration. This is Mariam. She was from Bosnia, but her family fled to the UK for a safer home for their children. The family fled as refugee’s.
Activity! l Imagine you are a migrant from one of the pictures l You have just arrived in London 1. What ‘pushed’ you from your home country? 2. What ‘pulled’ you to the UK? 3. Describe your first few days in the city. l Think about language difficulties, making friends, finding a job etc.
