Definition of Settlement �An area where a group of families live together is called settlement. �Brunhes : “Settlement is the topographic expression of the grouping and arrangement of two fundamental elements houses and highways”. �Dicken and Pits: “Settlement referto thegrouping of peoples and houses in to hamlets, viilages, towns and cities. ”
Types of Rural Settlements �There 1. 2. 3. 4. are 4 types of settlements: Dispersed(Scattered) Settlements Compact (Nucleated) Settlements Composite Settlements Fragmented (Semi-Clustered/ semi compact) Settlement
Dispersed(Scattered) Settlements In scattered settlements, houses are few and for from each other, generally such settlements are found in the area of high relief, dense forest, grassland , hot deserts and extensive agricultural lands. Houses are spared out with no set pattern. Found : Steppe Grassland of kazakshtan, Russia, Pairies of U. S. A. & Canada, Veldts (South Africa) , Dawns (Austrilia), Pampas(S. east Asia), India west. Bengal, Rajasthan, Siwalik, jammu&kashmir, nothern east India.
Characteristic of Dispersed Settlement 1. distances between scattered settlements can be clear. 2. This settlements have limited population as in small hamlets. 3. Facilities and services in these settlements are not adequate. 4. As these settlements are closer to nature they are free from pollution. 5. They depend on the centrally located village for their day to day requirements.
Compact (Nucleated) Settlements � Definition “ a pattern of settlement in which houses and other buildings are laid out closely together. � These settlements are generally close to water sources. � These are place where building are clustered around the central point. � The central point can be town square, religious centre, road junction or a min. It is based on houses from structure. Houses are clustered together round a middle point.
Characteristic of Compact Settlements 1. In these settlements houses are close together. 2. Social services are available in these settlements. 3. As these settlements develop in certain places over certain periods of time. They attains particular shapes. 4. Roads are narrow in old parts of these settlements. 5. People living together having common caste, race, religion and ideologies. 6. We found better social life and healthy conditions. Found : the valley of Nile , Chain, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Mexico, Brazil, India (Genetic, plain, Nagaland, Manipur, Punjab, Rajasthan, Mizoram)
Composite Settlements § “Some settlement are fragmented into several units and physically separated from each other is known as composite settlement. ” Found: Afghanistan, Canada, France, Germany, India (Ganga plain, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh)
Characteristic of Composite Settlements 1. Physcially separated from each other. 2. Hamlet or compact settlement is basically depends on agriculture. 3. These are distributed in from of main hamlet and surround by many small hamlets. 4. These comprise 2 -3 to ten (10) houses.
Fragmented (Semi-Clustered) Settlement � Fragmented (Semi-Clustered) Settlement is known as agglomerated semi clustered settlement. These settlements may result from tendency of clustering in a area of dispersed settlements.
Characteristic of Semi Clustered Settlements 1. Small size settlement but they are in 3 -4 numbers in a group. 2. These are dispersed around the main settlement. 3. In this case one or more section of the village, society chooses to live a little away from main cluster. Found: Nepal, China, U. S, A. , Pakistan, India (Gujarat, Ganga plain, Some part of Rajasthan)
