The Randstad and overspill towns • The cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague and Utrecht make up the Randstad “Conurbation” • Note – Conurbation = a collection of cities growing into each other to form one massive city

Overspill Towns • Overspill towns = “planned towns specifically built to house migrants from increasingly overcrowded cities” 1. Overspill towns where built on the Polders to absorb the growing population of the Randstad

Villages - provide small range of services Market towns - Wider range of services eg banks, supermarkets Defensive towns – Begun as defensive settlements – usually have a castle or ruins Resource-based settlements – based around the exploitation of a natural resource ie coal Ecclesiastical settlement – towns with a religious function i. e. Knock Recreational settlement – A town that provides leisure services for tourists Dormitory Settlements – People live here but work in a larger city.
